KILLRUDDERY HOUSE & GARDENS

Killruddery House & Gardens is an absolutely gorgeous 800-acre estate, where the Brabazon family has lived since 1618. Killruddery is currently under the stewardship of Lord and Lady Ardee, who have allowed the public into their world by sharing their family home, their gardens, and providing places to eat and shop. The property is just a 30-minute drive from Dublin’s city centre, and 40 minutes from the Dublin Airport. I highly recommend a visit to this stunning estate!

Once you go through the Garden Entrance, head to the Walled Garden. Killruddery makes its own apple juice from their very own apple trees planted here, and bees, hens, and pigs are kept in this area as well. Next, head over to the Sunken Garden, orchestrated by Daniel Robertson (who is famous for his work at Powerscourt, one of the places I suggest to visit in County Wicklow here!)

Then I invite you to marvel at Killruddery’s incredible Beech Circle, which contains a round pond that is 60 feet in diameter with a decorative French fountain. The double row of beeches that surround the fountain will truly take your breath away. At the front of the house, you will be able to see the Long Ponds, with plenty of benches scattered throughout the property to allow you to take in the tranquility of all the gardens.

Then grab lunch at The Grain Store, which uses many ingredients grown on the estate. Across the way is the Farm Shop, a treasure trove of Killruddery baked goods (I can’t get enough of their vegan brownies), ready-to-go meals that are prepared on site, garden items, books, and other little gifts.

Killruddery is a member of HHI, or Historic Houses of Ireland, so a peek inside is a must! Just to ensure there is no disappointment, I would reserve a house tour in advance, as you can only go inside with a tour. I love the Dining Room that looks out onto the Long Ponds, as well as the Orangery, which was designed and built in 1852. The 10th and 11th Earls of Meath (the title held by the head of the Brabazon family), collected sculptures during their European tours, and these items can be seen in the Orangery. Legend has it that the family tiara was sold to finance the making of this orangery, and I would say it was certainly worth it!

On your way out just before this country home is closed to the public, stop off at the Pizza Shed to grab a personal pizza to go. In sum, Killruddery is a serene spot with delicious food, gorgeous gardens, and is a wonderful piece of Irish history.
