HALLSTATT MUST SEES
Hallstatt is a beautiful small lake town in Austria that draws thousands of tourists each day. This fairytale town has a ton to offer, but these are just some of our favorites that you simply cannot miss!
Dachstein Giant Ice Cave
The Dachstein Giant Ice Cave is a very cool attraction that you can access by bus that will pick you up at the entrance of Hallstatt. After a 15-minute bus ride, a quick cable car ride, and a 20-minute hike, you will find yourself at the mouth of an ice cave! Tours last for 50 minutes, and while there you also have access to more hiking, the 5-Finger Lookout, and the Mammoth Cave. For more information on the Giant Ice Cave, please read our article here.
Hallstatt Salt Mine (Salzwelten Hallstatt)
The Hallstatt Salt Mine is the oldest salt mine in the world, and is still in operation! Unlike the Dachstein Ice Cave, you can access the mine directly in town by using the funicular that is located at the start of Hallstatt. The tour to visit this salt mine lasts 90 minutes, where you’ll have access to old miners’ slides and even a little salt taste testing. For more information on Salzwelten Hallstatt, please read our article here.
Marktplatz
The Marktplatz is a picturesque market square and is the center of many events such as concerts, festivals, and even Hallstatt’s Christmas Market. In addition, there are hotels and restaurants that are surrounding the square, so it is a very popular high-traffic area. The square is also very close to many of Hallstatt’s souvenir shops, so take the time to grab a salt rock or Christmas ornament!
Village Viewpoint
When you make your way to this spot, you will be able to see one of the most famous picturesque viewpoints in all of Austria. You will also see tons of other tourists who are trying to capture the view! Please note that this is the spot that permanent residents tried to cover up, because lately tourists have become quite loud and disruptive. Be respectful of the area and after you have taken in the beauty this vantage point provides, please leave so that others can enjoy it as well, and so that the citizens of this town do not have to deal with larger crowds than they already have to.
You can also grab a boat ride to take in Hallstatt from another viewpoint or walk around the shops. For additional information that we think you should know before you go, please read our article here. Happy travels!
